PROJECT ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PALCE so far in the school year 2003/04
- Since the beginning of our project A.R.I.V. in September 2002 each of the partner school is putting a stress on topics of tolerance in order to reduce violence within the schools and outside school. The subjects involved in the project are mainly history, the mother tongue, art, music.
- During the official COMENIUS WEEK the partner schools carried out various activities within their classrooms, their school: peace letters on balloons sent out to more people, getting to know our partners through the help of the different brochures, an A.R.I.V. Day, exhibition of the A.R.I.V. project.
- The project meeting and the study visit took place in Vienna from October 20th to October 23rd, 2003.
- Teacher exchange from Vepriai to Vienna and from Poland to Vienna have already taken place.
ACTIVITIES WHICH ARE ENVISAGED for the remaining part of the school year 2003/04
- Especially the teachers who teach ethnics, religion, history, the mother tongue and a subject in which they concentrate on social learning and communication will concentrate on methods which are suitable in class to use with younger and with older students in order to make them sensible to meet accusation, aggressive behaviour and other violent statements with a non-violent actions.
- Until the next project meeting which is taking place in Vepriai in Lithuania each school is discussing what topics of tolerance should be dealt with in various subjects and how these could be implemented in our curriculum.
- Until the next project meeting each partner school discusses ideas of how teachers of different subjects and the head teacher can be involved in the process (what is their role? What responsibility do they have? What kind of material is to be used in class?).
- Finding words to the anthem which was composed last school year.
- Continuing the work on the common dictionary - knowing something of the languages spoken in partner countries is a step to overcome prejudices. Besides that students should experience that a common language (English) is very important in common Europe and this should be a motivation for them to put more stress on their language studies (the Czech Republic will send the words that will be taken into the common dictionary to partners who add their mother tongue.
The details of what the dictionary will be like will be discussed on the second project meeting this year.
MOBILITY ACTIVITIES:

PROJECT ACTIVITIES THAT HAVE TAKEN PLACE so far in the school year 2002/03
- Since the beginning of our project A.R.I.V. in September 2002 each of us has put a stress on dealing with topics of tolerance in different subjects like history, literature in the mother tongue, art and music.
- As the types of schools involved in our school development project vary - students from primary school up to Upper Secondary - the activities done in each school are of course different:
- In arts teachers and students have started dealing with violence and racism by doing paintings in various techniques
- Students as well as teachers have been motivated to put more effort in studying a common foreign language in order to communicate with each other
- Writing essays in the mother tongue about violence versus tolerance
- Comenius Conferences were held in each school in order to let the staff know in details what is planned for the first year of the project.
- Parents' meetings were organised to inform the parents about the aims of the projects.
- The project meeting and the study visit took place in Girona in November.
- The younger students involved in our project have drawn self portraits and exchanged them with another school.
ACTIVITIES WHICH ARE ENVISAGED for the remaining part of the school year 2002/03
- A.R.I.V. - Logo competition
By the end of January each partner school will have sent a chosen LOGO to the Gymnázium Jana Blahoslava. Using modern technology there will be a competition which of the six LOGOS will be the one which the students and teachers involved in A.R.I. V. identify with.
- v Developing a brochure about the six partner schools:
Involved students and teachers still work on decided topics which we think are of interest for foreigners; each country will present its school and country on seven pages; the brochure is written in two languages - the mother tongue and English, the working language.
Contents of the brochure:
- introduction of the school
- information about the city where the school is located
- information about the country
- typical recipes of the region
- Festivals like Christmas, Easter and birthdays and how they are celebrated
- Peculiarities about the school or about the region
- Knowledge of students about the countries of our partner schools
- Constantly motivating children to write letters in their mother tongue or in a foreign language (German, English) to children in the schools of the partners
- Trying out different activities in several subjects (e.g. history, art, sports, mother tongue, foreign language, ethics or religion) that make students aware of how to deal with violence, racism and tolerance
- The elder students of our project start working on a travel guide
MOBILITY ACTIVITIES:
- Project meeting and the head teacher study visit took place from November 11th -14th, 2002 in Girona
It is advisable that the project meeting and the head teacher study visit take place at the same place and time as decisions can be made more effectively and more quickly as head teachers know more about sponsoring and possibilities within the school laws.
- There will take place following teacher exchanges within the school year 2002/03:
From Girona to Vicenza
From Vienna to Girona
From Ivančice to Vicenza
PROJECT ACTIVITIES to be carried out in the school year 2003/04
- Continue work on the Website and improve it
- Organising an A.R.I.V. week:
In spring 2004 an A.R.I.V. week will be held in all six participating schools. During this week the focus in teaching will be on topics of racism, violence, tolerance and more understanding towards each other. Within this week students should have possibilities to get into a closer contact with students of their partner schools by using modern technology and a common language.
- Developing a dictionary with important phrases for foreigners to see similarities, common roots in languages and to make students aware of the importance of knowing more than their mother tongue and English
- Pointing out common roots in history and national issues as well. This should help to build up a democratic Europe by using tolerance and showing acceptance towards national customs and languages
MOBILITY ACTIVITIES:
- Two project meetings and two head teacher study visits are planned for the year 2003/04
As the topic "Racism, violence and Intolerance" is a serious and difficult one to deal with we believe that two project meetings and head teacher study visits are a necessity.
END PRODUCTS 2003/04:
- An A.R.I.V. melody which should increase the feeling of solidarity within the partner countries
- Completion of the Web site
EVALUATION:
- Meeting of teachers who decide if students' attitude towards outsiders, refugees and members of fringe groups has changed through the focus on different activities like role plays (e.g. information about violence in families, in peer groups, in the state). In what way have they changed?
- v Interviews with students: has our Comenius project A.R.I.V. changed anything in you being European, being able to get along with people who speak another language and have other traditions?
- Contact between students from different partner schools: what language do they use? Do they use normal mail or e-mail?
DISSEMINATION:
- Article about the project in the local paper
- Video about the project meeting broadcasted on the local TV
- Parents' meeting
- Additional meetings of teachers during holiday time
