Area:
83.855 km2. With its area Austria is one of the smaller countries of the world. For comparison the USA is 100 times the size. Almost Y2 the area is still agricultural land though Austria is an industrial country and the number of farmers is decreasing. More than a third of the area is forest. This makes Austria a country rich in forests.
Population:
approx. 8 mill. (density of population: 96 / km2). For comparison: Germany's population is ten times bigger.
Capital:
Vienna (approx. 1.6 mill.). The population of Vienna has changed much for centuries. At the turn of the century there were more than 2 million inhabitants.
Countries and their Capitals:
Austria is divided into nine counties. Each county has its own capital. Nieder sterreich ( Lower Austria ) is the biggest country both in area and population . Burgenland has the smallest population, Vienna is the smallest in area and at the same time the biggest city of Austria - followed by Graz and Linz.
